Question: How can I anonymously find out if I have a defaulted DSL loan from the 70’s and if it is in default will it effect my ability to get a mortgage? ‘

Answer: In these times of stolen identities and credit fraud, keeping track of what is on your credit report is mandatory. You can request a copy of each report free after a credit denial or you can purchase a copy of the report from http://www.equifax.com/equifax-credit-report.htm for $30, that will cover the three main agencies. a defaulted loan would probably show up on one of those reports Yes but… (here’s where a lawyers needed) wouldnt the 430A(f) and 463(c)(3) of the Higher Education Act come into play namely:

“(3) Notwithstanding paragraphs (4) and (6) of section 605(a) of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (15 U.S.C. 1681c (a)(4), (6)), a consumer reporting agency shall make a report containing information received from the Secretary or an institution, as the case may be, regarding the status of a borrower’s account on a loan made under this part until the loan is paid in full.

In as much from my lay opinion you cant bankrupt a student loan and can report it for seven years or the statute of limitations whichever is greater. Student Loans ARE for good. So then the advise is check the credit report if they are on it … OUCH.. if not then great.
