Question: I’m a little confused on this whole FAFSA thing. The max the gov could give you (in grants) is 3000 a year, so what’s the big deal? The Perkins Loan is about 2000 and so is the Stafford loan. What else do you get? So far….all I got was the Pell Grant and the loans, and I still have like 25,000 more to pay for the NYU tuition.
Answer: You might want to qualify this. Some schools are lucky enough to do this. Many are not.
I think it is fair to say that admission at many schools is need-blind. You may be admitted, but they definitely might not come up with the money to help you pay for it.
Yes, parents can borrow the entire cost of college through the PLUS loan, but I think some people might get the wrong impression from your post. The universities have their own cash and employment available. Some schools also have tuition abatement programs.
The whole issue of tuition abatement is an interesting one. Sometimes a high-priced private like Stanford can actually be less expensive than a state school.
This point is just starting to get more press and there’s even a website dedicated to the true cost of college. (sorry, I cannot recall the address)
The bottom line is, if a school accepts you and you are truly in financial need, they will find a way. It may mean the max student loan and 1,000 hours working on campus, but they’ll do it.
Have you already received your complete package or are you looking at some sort of preliminary report?
