Question: Plenty of countries that are willing to accept immigrants that are highly skilled (i.e. college degree or advanced graduate degree). Think about it, none of the money you earn will ever have to go to those damn student loans. Talk about a “fresh start”!!
Answer: First of all, yes my name is Mortimer and I’m quite proud of it thank you. Second, if you want a simple solution to your debt problem, there isn’t. Any solution worth exploring requires thought, not simplicity. If you were smart enough to graduate from college or even grad school, you should be clever enough to find the existing loopholes in the bankruptcy code. Ever wonder why its better to file in the 9th circuit as opposed to the 2nd? Maybe because the 9th circuit interprets “discharge” within the code as a FULL DISCHARGE. Third, you assume that lawsuits would be waiting for me upon my return. If I would decide to come back (what for?), I’d come back under a different passport. Sorry, but U.S. Laws don’t apply to foreign nationals. Even if I was sued, no problem. I can’t go to jail. Loan default is not ground for criminal action, only civil. So you work out a payment plan. Then you can be finished paying your loan off on you 156th birthday. Science should progress by then, unless all scientists, upon awakening in the morning, decide it can’t be done and therefore not worth trying for. An interesting side issue. I’ve noticed that people who give their real names tend to post more real-world, responsible stuff. There are exceptions both ways, and even those who tend to post good stuff sometimes slip up. But as a general observation, it seems that most of the nasty stuff against student loan borrowers, in particular, has come from people who don’t give their full real names. (Marsha Schlegel is a welcome exception!) Those unnamed critics stand in stark contrast to a surprising number of full-named borrowers who are willing to talk honestly about drastic options like bankruptcy. It appears in this regard, as in others, that supposedly irresponsible student debtors are, in some ways, the most responsible players in the game.
Anyway, in this particular case, it seems a bit nervy for Brian Who? to challenge Mortimer Bevridge on the use of one’s real name.
