Question: I’m tring to figuire out if I have any shot what so ever to put my self though school, and if it will be worth it in the end. My past educational back ground is very poor, though I am very far from being stupid. I never graduated form highschool but I took my GED at 15yrs. of age and passed. I did not do so bad on the saturday afternoon-test either, if memory serves me correct the score was in about the 1300 area. Now on the next problem. At 17 I defauted on a government student loan to a trade school due to the fact that I got in to some trouble with the law, and got put in prision for two years. Well now that leaves me no choice but to pay out of my own pocket for all the expenses, if I’m lucky I might land a few grants, who knowns? On to the major battle with my self about the whole issue. Most of the poeple I’ve come across who have graduated from not so major colleges seem to have made nothing of them selfes in the career they chose for them selves. So the question is how do I prevent that for my self, and telling me just not to go to colleges is not the answer!

Answer: Two thoughts immediately occur. One, you can cure the default and become again eligible for government-subsidized aid by making “satisfactory” repayment arrangements with the guarantor of your loan. Two, you may be able to have the entire loan rescinded for lack of capacity, since you were seventeen at the time you signed the loan agreement. (Minors cannot enter into legally binding contracts.) I’d think that trying to do number one is probably in your better interest.
